Murals can bring new life to the most ordinary spaces. An artist known as Bihuashiyuge proves this time and time again by transforming large walls into wonderful artistic compositions. Using a variety of materials such as plaster and paint, the China-based artist takes viewers on a visual journey.

“Join me as I explore the world of wall design and bring creativity to life in the most unique and inspiring ways,” the muralist states on  her YouTube channel. “From mesmerizing murals to stunning patterns, I'll take you on a journey of innovative techniques and imaginative ideas that will transform any space into a work of art. Get ready to be amazed and inspired as we explore the endless possibilities of wall design together!”

Through social media, Bihuashiyuge shares the creative process behind her bad-relief works of art, which seem to leap right off the wall. With reference photos in hand, the artist begins applying materials to the massive surface. Her installation of the Great Wall of China is positively mesmerizing.

As seen in her videos, the muralist starts with heaping slabs of putty she slaps onto the wall that serves as her large canvas. She creates a 3D composition by shaping and carefully carving bricks, steps, and more into the malleable material. She does so at varying lengths and angles to mimic depth, and then adds a range of greens, browns, and blues to animate the landscape. Once it’s complete, it's almost as if you could step foot right into one of the New Seven Wonder of the World.

Scroll down for more mesmerizing videos of Bihuashiyuge's process. To stay up to date with her latest creations, you can follow the artist on Instagram.

Artist’s Captivating Land Art Emphasizes the Magnificence of Materials Found in Nature

Jon Foreman's Manifold Spiral of 2024 consists of a spiral shape of various stones or rocks on a beach. In the background is the shoreline with the bright sun shining through the clouds.

Wales-based artist Jon Foreman explores the calming presence of nature in his magnificent land art installations. He practices his art “as an escape from the stresses of everyday life.” In one of his most recent work, titled Manifold Spiral, Foreman utilizes on-site materials to create a rock sanctuary of sorts.

Constructed off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales, with the assistance of Terence Wakefield and Osk, Manifold Spiral consists of carefully arranged rocks in a circular formation. This curated coil of minerals is situated on a beach, nestled between other rocks that are sunken into the sand. In the distance, the shoreline is illuminated by bright, warm sunlight. Waves ripple in the background, and clouds dance in the sky above, adding a fluffy texture to the scene.

By collecting stones found in the natural surroundings, Foreman further emphasizes the intrinsic beauty of Mother Nature. Each of his carefully crafted compositions seem as if a sea creature has washed upon shore and planted roots on a bed of sand.

Walking the land to gather stones and then arranging them in the desired pattern—whether it be a Golden Ratio-like spiral, a color-coordinated geometric shape, or a simple circle—establishes a relationship between the artist and his earthy materials. Temporality and the uncertain behavior of nature impact the longevity of the artist's work. A strong wave that crashes upon the shore could easily tamper with the composition, and he fully surrenders to this risk. The unpredictable and ephemeral, combined with these natural resources inspire Foreman to honor the enchanting characteristics of nature. Fortunately, most viewers experience the magnitude of his work through photography and short films.

The land artist focuses on “different” elements that come together to create micro landscapes. Finding new purpose in everything from leaves and tree roots to mud and rocks, his art is incredibly meditative. Foreman experiments with several artistic components such as scale, texture, materials, and location of installation. His creative vision knows no bounds.

To stay up to date with Foreman's art, you can follow him on his Instagram. You can also purchase prints of his artwork from his SmugMug shop.

Foreman utilizes stones, shells, and other natural elements of various shapes, sizes, and textures that highlight the varying art materials that can be found in nature.

Tabulae Colos, 2024 is a composition of various rocks that are made up of concentric squares. Jon Foreman is also featured in this photograph, showing his influence on the natural world around him.

Foreman’s micro landscapes create visual narratives that comment on the relationship between humans and nature.

Erythrean Sun, 2024 is another one of Jon Foreman's compositions that highlights the beauty of nature. Arranged in a sunburst formation, these natural materials seem to come to life.

Circumactus, 2023 was created at Lindsway Bay by Jon Foreman. This minimalistic approach allows more of the sandy texture to become a focal point of the temporary installation.

Aqua Exemplaria, 2024 by Jon Foreman is a composition of rocks that mimics the shoreline. This image, shot from a bird's-eye view, features rocks in swirling patterns that extend from the water out towards the sand.

The simple geometric forms come together to create meditative compositions that transport you to the most serene state of mind.

Milan’s Stazione Centrale is home to JR‘s latest installation—a daring piece that sees the artist challenge himself to try something new. In La Nascita (The Birth), JR trades his signature medium of paper and glue for scaffoldings in the name of sculptural anamorphosis. In other words, by trasferring a distorted image onto a layered, three-dimensional setting, the artist creates different optical illusions that reflect on the origins of the station.

For this installation, JR transformed the entrance to Milan's Central Station and the Piazza Duca d’Aosta into a rocky landscape. The piece retells the origins of the train station. After the opening of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, which connects Italy with Switzerland and France through the Alps, King Victor Emmanuel III laid a symbolic foundation of stone for the new central train station. As such, the installation weaves the cavernous formations that preceded the tunnel into the building’s unique mix of classical Roman, eclectic, rationalist, art nouveau, and art deco architecture.

La Nascita is made up of a series of printed images of rock formations plastered onto aluminum slats. “The monumental trompe-l'œil blurs the boundaries of time and place, fashioning a surreal architectural fantasy that draws a link between the grandeur of the station today and its history,” the artist's statement explains. The piece also approaches the human need to explore and venture into the unknown. Much like those who built it, visitors are called upon by the depths of the cave.

In addition to the main scaffolding on the station's façade, JR affixed smaller structures on the ground, creating a piece that commuters can further explore. Committed to the low impact of his pieces, all the materials used in this monumental installation will be repurposed in future projects or melted down and recycled.

“In spaces that have social issues, my work is about bringing people together,” JR tells The Art Newspaper. “In a place like this, a huge range of people come to catch the train. When they find themselves in front of an exhibition, they will suddenly have a different kind of interaction.”

La Nascita, which unveiled ahead of Milan Design Week, will be on view through May 1, 2024.

Colorful Immersive Installations Celebrate the Unique Beauty of Earth’s Biodiversity

Biodiversity art installation by Clare Celeste

Environmental artist Clare Celeste proudly pursues art as an avenue to bring attention to the eight different ecosystems on Earth. Using hand-cut images of various foliage and animals, the artist cultivates an immersive experience. Her work provokes viewers to relish in the beauty of our ecosystems whilst motivating viewers to treat the natural world with kindness.

The convergence of growing up in Brazil and the environment of her current home in Berlin, is presented in The Garden. This installation is intended to inspire the preservation of our planet, as a sixth mass extinction is not far off in the future. Celeste's goal is to establish a place where viewers can reinvigorate their relationship with Earth. Bright hues of greens, pinks, and yellows dance across the composition of butterflies, birds, and palm leaves. Imagine standing amongst one of Celeste's beautiful compositions. It is almost as if you can hear the gentle flapping of the wings of each insect flutter by, or the soft rustling of leaves as animals move from one spot to another. Celeste's incredible talent uses hand-cut images to breathe life into art that focuses on environmental activism.

The collage artist brings attention to the ways that humans have an impact on the environment, in a hopeful manner. Celeste not only draws from unique ecosystems around the world, but recently shared an insightful message regarding her passion:

“Growing up in Brazil, I was inspired by the ocean, rivers, and jungles. My earliest and most formative memories are of lush, humming tropical ecosystems —and the encroaching industrial landscapes of Brazil’s cities. These impressions deeply influence my artwork. Biodiversity is my endless muse, but 70% of biodiversity has been destroyed since 1970. We’ve forgotten that we breathe the breath of trees, that we’re part of a larger carbon cycle, that we are embedded within ecosystems. We have this illusion of separateness that is driving our ecological crisis. I believe in the power and art and storytelling to reawaken a connection to our planet. By immersing audiences in the splendor of nature's intricate beauty, I hope to inspire a deeper reverence for the Earth and a commitment to its preservation.✨”

Her enthusiasm and passion to use art as a visual storytelling device that also comments on our envirornment is apparent in her careful curation of each micro environment she constructs. Celeste is also deeply inspired by an essay titled “Loving a Vanishing World,” by Emily N. Johnston. This excerpt stresses a sense of urgency to appreciate what is at our fingertips and how humans can cherish this.

“When we think about accelerating extinction, it’s like looking at the terrifying narrows of an hourglass, where only a few will slide through. So sometimes I imagine myself instead on the far side of something more like an ecological birth canal. How many of Earth’s beauties can we help to survive the passage into the next era? Is each one not a gift we can safeguard to the world by our actions?”

— Emily N. Johnston, “Loving a Vanishing World” in All We Can Save

Beyond providing immersive works inspired by nature and literature, Celeste created The Garden to touch on environmentalism. Weekly online events hosted by various females in the climate and culture industries help to “co-create a more just, equitable, and regenerative world.” Her colorful and informative compositions continue to reflect the marvels of the various textures of each ecoscape.

Berlin-based artist Clare Celeste uses immersive art installations as a form of environmental activism.

Clare Celeste Börsch's installation uses a variety of wildlife such as insects and birds, to comment on the magnificence of the environment.

Hand-cut flowers and animals emphasize the diversity of each ecosystem.

Clare Celeste Börsch creates larger than life imagery of the beauty that lives in the wild.

Did you know there are eight different ecosystems on this planet? The artist shares her passion for each one.

Clare Celeste Börsch is fascinated with all the elements that make each ecosystem unique, even down to different fungi.

She adds texture in bright, vibrant colors to her compositions to emphasize the beauty of nature.

When you hear the word “portal,” images of fantasy or science-fiction books probably come to mind. And while portals may not be naturally occurring in our world, technology has provided us with the opportunity to create things that used to only exist in the pages of storybooks.

Portal is one of these creations. Aptly named, it is a new public installation that will be located at the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street this spring. It will broadcast live video from Dublin, Ireland, into New York City. At the same time, another portal will be set up in Dublin that will live stream footage from New York City, connecting the viewers at both locations.

Benediktas Gylys, a Lithuanian artist and entrepreneur, is the mastermind behind the portals. He is passionate about creating projects that connect humanity and advertise our similarities at a time when we are increasingly divided. According to Portal‘s website, “Portals are an invitation to meet fellow humans above borders and prejudices and to experience our home—planet Earth—as it really is: united and one.”

This set of portals is far from the first one that the organization has worked on. Currently, they have a pair located in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland, that were set up in 2021 as an homage to Gylys' home country. Their website also houses a form where you can write about why your city should have a portal installed in it.

For more on the Portal project, check out its website and Instagram.

A real-life portal will be built in New York City and Dublin in the spring, and will live stream video between both locations.

Large Nature Model by Refik Anadol

While many of us have only become familiar with AI over the past year or so, artist Refik Anadol has been using the technology for years to create immersive installations. Now, his studio is releasing its most ambitious project yet: the Large Nature Model, the world's first open-source generative AI model dedicated to nature.

Under development for DATALAND, Refik Anadol Studio's future museum and Web3 platform dedicated to data visualization and AI art, The Large Nature Model is trained on billions of open-source nature images. Interestingly, the model isn't just for visuals; it can also produce sound and scent elements.

“Blending art, technology, and nature, our model aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire innovative solutions by finding connections among isolated archives,” shares Anadol. “By engaging people on multiple sensory levels, the outputs of the model make the abstract concept of environmental conservation tangible, encouraging a collective responsibility to act.”

Anadol presented the model at the NVIDIA GTC AI Conference, where he transformed a 65-foot by 131-foot wall into a live AI data sculpture. Fed with 2.5 million ethically sourced nature images, the wall exploded with visuals that show the model's endless creative possibilities.

The conference is not the only place where the Large Nature Model is on display. At London's Serpentine Gallery, Anadol's Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive shows his years-long experimentation with data on coral reefs and rainforests. On view until April 7, visitors are in for a multi-sensory experience that will deepen their love of nature.

“The dream is to help gallery visitors grasp the unseen yet incredible role of data in our worlds,” shared Anadol in an interview with long-time mentor, art critic Hans Ulrich Obrist. “I believe people will feel enveloped by the data, the richness of information, and the overwhelming beauty found within nature.

“This project is not about mimicking or replacing nature, it's about appreciating, loving, and respecting nature. We’re not replacing nature, we’re preserving it.”

Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira brings his incredible installations based on nature to Australia. Fairy Tales is an exhibition at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art that brings together the work of international visual storytellers and invites them to ruminate on the stories that influence our youth. For the show, Oliveira was tasked with transforming the entryway and did so by creating a twisted, gnarled forest that brings visitors into the realm of fairy tales.

The installation, titled Corupira, takes its name from a mythical creature of the Brazilian forest. In folklore, this devilish creature from the Tupi-Guarani myth has red hair that can ignite into flames. It also has backward feet, so when it walks, it makes false footprints to confuse people moving through the woods. For Oliveira's installation, enormous trunks burst forth from the white walls of the gallery and sprawl across the room. The twisting branches create a maze designed to appeal to the senses and force visitors to watch their steps.

“I’ve tried to create an environment that you have a different relationship with the space and somehow you are back to watch(ing) out. If you don’t look up, you’re gonna hit your head on a branch,” he shares. “Get back to your senses. I think that’s something the world misses today.”

Created using plywood, tapumes—or fencing—veneers, and tree branches, Corupira is a fitting welcome to the exhibition. Oliveira's interest in wood developed out of his painting practice as he slowly became curious about three-dimensional works and how they shape space.  As he broke down pieces of wood, the splintered edges reminded him of brushstrokes. Now, he uses that technique to build up installations that are impressive in their size and scale.

You can catch Corupira at the Gallery of Modern Art until the closing of Fairy Tales on April 28, 2024.

Female Space Pioneer Makes History By Sending Jeff Koons’ Art to the Moon [Interview]

Jeff Koons and Chantelle Baier from 4SPACE

In late February 2024, history was made when the first female-led space company, 4SPACE, took Jeff Koons‘ art to the Moon. The successful launch makes Koons the first artist to have authorized artwork on the lunar surface and everything came together thanks to the vision of 4SPACE founder Chantelle Baier.

Baier founded 4SPACE as a vehicle to bridge non-traditional space companies with the space industry. Under her leadership, 4SPACE has achieved the first authorized art gallery to be sent to the Moon in 2024, a significant milestone in the footprints on the Moon. And it seems fitting that Koons, a pioneer of the contemporary art world, would be the first creative to hold this honor.

Jeff Koons: Moon Phases comprises 125 unique artworks, each consisting of three components: a sculpture that was installed on the Moon, a sculpture that stays on Earth, and an NFT that corresponds with the sculptures on the Moon and the Earth. The 125 miniature stainless steel Moon Phase sculptures are currently displayed on the Moon in a cube, which was designed and built by 4SPACE in consultation with Koons.

“The Moon Phase artworks are associated with individuals who made important accomplishments in human history,” 4SPACE revealed in a written statement. “The list of names is universal, from various cultures throughout the world, fields, and time periods. Displayed in front of each artwork, the names memorialize the figures. In this way, Koons honors some of the greatest achievements of the past to inspire future generations.”

The work made its way into space via the Intuitive Machines Nova-C lunar lander, Odysseus, named after the hero of Homer's Greek epic. The Nova-C is part of NASA's CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center.

When Odysseus touched down on the lunar surface, it became the first successful U.S. moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. And it is the first time that a privately owned spacecraft has successfully landed.

We had a chance to speak with Baier about this momentous occasion and what it means to her, as well as what it took to make this outer space art gallery come to life. Read on for My Modern Met's exclusive interview.

Chantelle Baier Assembling Jeff Koons Art Cube

What sparked your initial love of space?

I was born in the land of the living sky in Canada, where there was no light pollution, and I was surrounded by the vastness of trillions of twinkling stars in the sky. We would spend a lot of time stargazing, so naturally I dreamt of going to the Moon since I was a kid. I began to realize NASA has led to wonderful advancements that help us here on Earth, and I began to learn how important space is for our future. The idea of exploration beyond Earth’s gravity and traveling the Moon and Mars ignited my curiosity to learn more about space and the earth.

What motivated you to start 4SPACE?

I was encouraged by a mentor of mine, Dr. Chris McKay, to set up 4SPACE to hone in on my diverse skillset that ranges from technical knowledge to the entertainment/fashion industry. 4SPACE was set up as a vehicle to bring non-traditional space companies into the space industry. With this non-linear way of thinking, our focus is on commercializing the space industry by incorporating branding, marketing, and outside-of-the-box ways of approaching traditional industries.

Odysseus with the Moon in the Background

What accomplishment are you most proud of since 4SPACE was founded?

We just became the first woman-owned company on the Moon. We also became the first company to place a clear art gallery with Jeff Koons Moon Phases statues on the Moon on board the Intuitive Machines Lunar Lander that successfully landed on February 22, 2024.

How did you become involved in the Jeff Koons project?

In 2021, I contacted a small company that had just won an award from NASA to go to the Moon. Their mission had scientific NASA payloads, and I had an idea for a project to be placed on the Moon. The lunar lander didn’t have enough power for our payload, so I had to redesign a powerless payload. My investor had a great relationship with Jeff Koons' son Sean, and we commissioned him to design 125 statues.

What type of research went into creating the display for his art?

Extensive work in many different areas spanning material research, adhesives that would survive the trip to the Moon, space radiation, lunar environment, and analysis.

What type of work went into getting permission to leave something like this on the Moon?

Currently, there aren’t any permissions per se. It is our ethos to think of sustainability, scientific relevance, marketing, commercializing, and the return on investment in a circular way of thinking in every project. We understand the rare opportunity we have, we know these projects will be placed on the Moon and remain there forever, so we want them to have scientific relevance, paired with new ways of marketing, branding, and connecting our everyday lives to the Moon. Our approach is to ensure multiple facets of success in each project that positively support the space industry, NASA objectives, and what’s relevant to our partners whether it be artists, brands, you name it.

How does it feel to have 4SPACE involved in such a groundbreaking project?

Out of this world. It’s truly an honor to be a part of this historic mission to the Moon and to have had such a cultural impact and footprint.

What do you hope that people take away from this work?

I hope to inspire a new way of thinking. I hope to show the world that you can dream and achieve your goals no matter what challenges you face. I came from very modest roots, and I believe we need to support each other and work together to create a better world here on Earth. Utilizing the new opportunities that the Space Industry has to offer, everyone brings hope to us here on Earth. New ways of exploring that open up new jobs and hopefully a bright future.

If I can take a world famous artist and put his work on the Moon… please take my word, there is a new industry coming and it’s the space industry.

Beach Art by Jon Foreman

There is arguably nothing more peaceful than taking a relaxed walk along the beach. Between the feeling of sand beneath your feet and the sound of the waves gently crashing, it is no surprise that artist Jon Foreman relishes in the meditative quality of his surroundings. He takes the tranquility of the sandy setting one step further through his art by creating mesmerizing beach installations made of stones, shells, and driftwood that he finds on-site.

Every piece that Foreman creates pays homage to its natural environment in some way. Sometimes, his displays are arranged to mirror their surroundings, such as shells and waves. Other designs resemble spell-binding spirals or celestial bodies such as the sun and moon. Regardless of the artwork's form, every piece that Foreman creates utilizes natural materials from around the beach. Through his work, he enhances the natural beauty of the natural environment rather than distracting from it. The size of his artwork can vary widely, from only a few feet across to so large that it takes up nearly an entire beachfront.

When Foreman shows up at his destination of choice, the Welsh artist often doesn't know what he will create. Instead, he allows himself to be inspired by the beauty of nature. Despite the inevitability that his work with be destroyed or washed away, either by the waves or human activity, this doesn't stop Foreman from creating. This knowledge also makes his work especially precious since it won't be around forever.

If you want to keep up with Foreman's art, you can follow him on his Instagram. You can also purchase prints of his artwork from his SmugMug shop.
