For many, a lamp is a functional piece of furniture that lights up a space. But for an artist known as bycal, illuminating a room presents a unique opportunity for a creative and inventive design. Instead of following the usual formula for a lamp, they went a completely different direction, and this is how the arndale lamp was born.

For context, the Manchester Arndale is a famous shopping center located in England. The building, which resembled an industrial office building, was initially constructed between 1972 and 1979 and was redeveloped after the 1996 Manchester bombing. Due to the lack of natural light and maze-like interior, it faced harsh criticism after it was built. The yellow tiles covering the exterior of the building, which one newspaper described as “bile yellow,” also didn't help.

Yet bycal decided to base their lamp design on this piece of architecture, choosing to fill a replica of the Manchester Arndale with light. The small wooden model of the shopping center is about 11 inches (28 centimeters) tall, and when the lamp is turned on, about half of the little windows glow yellow. All lamps are constructed and painted by bycal, and the craftsmanship on display is remarkable, as the replica is perfectly to scale. It really looks like the artist shrunk the building down to fit in someone's living room.

There is a bit of nostalgia to the piece, as the Manchester Arndale hasn't maintained its original design. Following the IRA bombing in 1996, much of the building had to be refurbished. This included removing the notorious yellow tiles and replacing them with modern-looking glass and metal and providing the structure with a more open floor plan. Today, the Manchester Arndale is Europe's biggest inner-city shopping center, with 1.4 million square feet of space, and hosting over 230 stores and restaurants.

Cat owners know how curious felines can be. Whether it's climbing bookshelves or hopping onto desks, there's no stopping their curiosity. Rather than fight this instinct, Portugal-based designer Ricardo Sá has created a piece of furniture that gives them freedom to explore. The Choo Choo console table is a streamlined piece that includes a secret passageway for cats to wander through.

The table gets its name from the bullet train-inspired shape. Sá uses all natural materials in the assembly, like wood and cane webbing, to give it an organic feeling. “This console is not just a piece of furniture but a dedicated space designed to enhance the relationship between cats and their human counterparts,” Sá explains. “The central focus of the design is the exclusive space dedicated to our feline friends.”

The secret tunnel has an opening on either end of the table. Through these cutouts, cats can weave their way through the shelves to arrive at the other side. Or, they can stay safely situated inside the console table and peer through the perforations in the cane webbing, “satisfying their natural curiosity.”

Technology has certainly made our life easier at home—just think of all the appliances and devices that help you and bring you comfort. But as one designer has proved, technology can make our spaces more beautiful as well. An inventor known as Döuyin or dazhongdexiaowowo, has gained some success online thanks to his building talents. Whether making his own designs or cleverly recreating ones he has seen online, he shares the DIY process of bringing intricate and gorgeous technological home goods to life.

In a recent video shared on Reddit, Döuyin presents a black pressure-sensitive coffee table. When he slides his hands around it, the table lights up, as if a trail of twinkling stars were left on the places he touched. However, Döuyin does not keep his process a secret. He shows every single detail of how the table was made, from cutting the wood to the painting and polishing.

While he speaks in Mandarin, the way Döuyin documents his process is so illustrative that it transcends the language barrier. The final product is truly mesmerizing. Not only does it look great and work perfectly, but the man also shows it in action, as it lights up with both his touch, the pressure applied by a bottle, and under the weight of his cat.

Döuyin also worked on a similar project and shared the process on Instagram; but this time, rather than a black canvas covered in stars, he replicated a design featuring blue tiles made out of resin. The result is just as entrancing, with the blue joints connecting a pattern of wood hexagon lights up. But what makes these projects even more captivating is seeing just how much effort Döuyin puts into building these magical pieces.

Cats are curious by nature. However, there's so much indoor felines get to explore before the novelty is over. Aware of the benefits there are to fostering a kitty's sense of adventure, a design team came up with a clever concept. La Jato del Gato, a Peru-based company, created a stylish collection named MOCATS—modular cat furniture that can be arranged and rearranged in a myriad of ways for your cat to explore.

The team behind La Jato del Gato are Vanessa Briceño and Brian Geiser, who both have backgrounds in architecture—and living with cats. “After we finished our degrees, we decided to make a den for my cat Baloo. It was then that we realized the health and behavioral benefits that it had,” Briceño tells My Modern Met. “Since then, we have been redesigning and improving the product, based on customer feedback and knowledge about feline behavior that we have acquired over the last few years.”

But their work is not only informed by cats, as Briceño and Geiser have also found inspiration in the local architecture. Particularly, their Jatos Chicha line is inspired by the DIY constructions that can be found in Peruvian cities. “In Peru, people call this type of architecture ‘arquitectura chicha,' in which a variety of design styles are built on top each other according to the taste and growth of each family”.

With three cats at home, Briceño and Geiser have seen the advantage of cat modular furniture firsthand. “Having a modular tower allows you to diversify the cat's play circuit, give them a new path, something new that they'll want to continue exploring,” Briceño explains. The designer adds that modules can also convenient when a cat needs to be relegated to a certain room, or if the feline has aged and could use a playground that meets their new needs, whether they want to play, sleep, scratch, climb, or hide.

On top of the ingenious design, the team also strived to make the building process to be quick and easy while also being durable in the long run, all without the use of any toxic additives. The result is an elegant piece of customizable cat furniture that is both eco-friendly and endlessly entertaining.

Whether you work in an office or from home, being on the clock can mean long hours of sitting, often in front of a screen. But as many of us know, this is not an ideal position to be in. When we think about sustainability and our homes, we’re often only thinking about the systems that power them. Solar panels on the roof are one example, but it's important to take a holistic approach. How can the things we use to decorate our home be eco-friendly, too? Contardi is an Italian lighting company that asked the question, “What is green lighting?” Hue and energy consumption aside, the company wanted to create a light that was conscious of its raw material use. That's how AIR, designed by Adam Tihany, was born.

The suspension light is sleek and functional, comprising 100% recyclable materials. Featuring a dual lampshade design, its laser-engraved cuts add both a decorative element and a way to filter the air and infuse the space with a warm glow. “AIR as a design inspiration is as broad as it is elusive,” Tihany explains. “Invisible, equally light and heavy, and absolutely essential for life on our planet.”  The result is an effortless design that appears to levitate from the ceiling.

The AIR light offers an alternative way for us to view ecological lighting. It doesn’t relate to a specific function or solution, but it’s a set of characteristics that allow the product to reduce its negative impact on the planet. For AIR, this means using Green Cast, a 100% recycled and recyclable material that’s made from end-of-life products and industrial processing waste. It can be indefinitely repurposed.
