Airbnb Recreates the House From Pixar’s ‘Up‘ and Even Makes It Float in the Air

The image of a house attached to thousands of colorful balloons and floating into the air has become an iconic symbol of the beloved Pixar film Up. Owned by the grumpy Carl Fredricksen, this quaint home has made movie lovers dream of one day taking off to their bucket-list destination. Now, Airbnb is making part of this wish come true. In honor of the movie's 15th anniversary, the company has faithfully recreated the house from Up—and it even floats!

Rather than make their way to a remote region of South America, those who wish to stay in the Up house will have to travel to the red rocks of Abiquiu, New Mexico. While Airbnb has fitted it with 8,000 balloons, what truly makes the illusion come to life is a crane that rises the dwelling several feet above the ground.

“I don’t always like visitors, but I guess it’s pretty nice to have them now that it’s just me and Dug. So, come stay in my cozy home I made with my dear Ellie,” writes Airbnb, in the voice of Fredricksen. “My greatest adventures have happened here, and I learned that the best ones are always with someone you love, so bring your pals to kickstart your very own Adventure Book and watch as my house drifts off before you depart.”

As if the sight of the floating house wasn't breathtaking on its own, Airbnb has truly captured the spirit of the Fredricksen's home as depicted in the movie. Visitors will see Carl and Ellie's lounge chairs, photographs of the couple around the living room, little Russell's backpack by the staircase, the lovely mailbox with hand prints by the porch, and even Dug's food bowl.

Once you're done exploring the house, there are plenty of activities you can partake in. By day, you can help Mr. Fredricksen by checking his mail before preparing a picnic basket and filling your own Adventure Book. At night, you can gather in the lawn to stargaze with your party.

The Up house is part of Airbnb's Icons collection, made up of one-of-kind international experiences. Other adventures in the Icons collection include a stay at Paris' Musée d’Orsay during the 2024 Olympic Games, a night in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy, and a visit to the X-Men mansion in Westchester, New York.

If you want to book any of these experiences, make sure to sign up on the listing's Airbnb page. Some are under $100 per person, while others, like Mr. Fredricksen's home, are free. Submissions for the Up house close on May 14. Afterwards, Airbnb will select the winning guests to finalize their bookings. You can sign up here.

AI Architecture Concept by Mertcan Guldilek

Everyday, more creative projects are using AI to explore different concepts. However, in our opinion, one of the most successful uses of this technology has been in the field of architecture. Concept architects have been effectively using AI to produce incredible designs that push boundaries and possibly inspire new buildings to come. For instance, architect Mertcan Güldilek is a self-professed AI enthusiast, and his Nordic Breeze hotel concept is so inviting we're hoping someone will actually break ground on it.

The Turkish designer was inspired by the warm light during the golden hour that occurs just before the sun sets. He was intrigued to understand how the warm light of Turkey might translate to the forests of Sweden, and from there, his research grew. Ultimately, Güldilek decided that the best type of building to experience the panorama he envisioned would be a hotel. The result is Nordic Breeze, a contemporary hotel bathed in warm sunlight in a Swedish valley.

“As the sun descends, casting its golden rays across the land, the hotel will radiate a warm and inviting aura that draws guests in,” he tells My Modern Met. “The golden hour lighting will envelop the building, illuminating every detail and infusing the surroundings with a magical quality. This is the romantic and inspirational part of the design.”

Nordic Breeze by Mertcan Guldilek

Thanks to Güldilek's use of AI, he is able to efficiently produce concepts that surpasses anything he's imagined. As a result, he's able to spend more time fine-tuning the designs. For Güldilek, AI's multiple solutions to a single prompt also allow him to see alternate outcomes that he may not have thought of on his own. While quality control can be an issue, the designer is certain that this technology will break open the field, as he believes we are in the midst of a “digital renaissance” that will surely transform the profession.

“Our tastes, thoughts, and designs are transferred to a digital canvas created by AI,” he shares. “With this perspective, architects can rapidly test myriad scenarios conceived in their minds, evaluating the merit of each scenario. As architects explore more scenarios, their architectural perspective and ability to create architectural compositions will grow. In this way, architects can cultivate themselves like Renaissance artists, learning as they produce and producing as they learn.”

Architect Mertcan Güldilek, a self-professed AI enthusiast, used the technology for a stunning hotel concept.

As winter envelopes the nordic countries, blanketing the landscape in snow, the famous ICEHOTEL is reincarnated. Located in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, 200 km (a little over 124 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, this incredible landmark has been around since 1989. Not only is it the world's first and largest hotel constructed from ice, but it is also an artistic marvel, debuting new sculptures and installations carved from ice each year. The 2023-2024 season celebrates the ICEHOTEL's 34th anniversary.

Thirty-two artists from 14 countries gathered at the site to work in collaboration with the hotel's construction team and creative director Luca Roncoroni to transform ice blocks harvested from the frozen Torne River. Each winter season of the ICEHOTEL looks a little different, and for this winter, the structure features 15 art suites, a main hall, and a ceremony hall. Planning for the 34th edition began in spring 2023; during which time, ice blocks were collected and stored at an ice warehouse in Jukkasjärvi. All in all, the building phase of ICEHOTEL 34 took up six long weeks.

“Once again, our international artists have created something unique and spectacular,” says Marie Herrey, CEO of ICEHOTEL. “The art suites of this year showcase an incredible height of creativity and form an exciting collection of artistic dreams, expressions, and ideas.” She goes onto describe the fairy tale and nature themes that appear throughout some of the ice installations. Among the numerous eyecatching artworks is a pair of sculptures titled Katt & Råtta by  Tjåsa Gusfors and Hanneke Supply which depicts a giant rat hiding a block of cheese away from a cat's glowing yellow gaze.

The stunning design of ICEHOTEL 34 is preserved with a constant inner temperature of 23°F (or -5°C). Even after the winter season of the hotel melts with the spring, a section of the hotel remains open year-round for visitors to experience some of the icy wonders.

When thinking of a Florida vacation, many envision sandy beaches and amusement parks. But given the amazing landscapes and biodiversity of the area, wouldn't it be cool to also experience all of that? LULU Glamping, located in the heart of Miami Dade County, is marrying nature with design for the ultimate getaway.

As a truly luxurious glamping facility, LULU Glamping offers the all the comforts of technology without sacrificing the beauty of the outdoors. Each glamping site boasts 1,100 square feet, divided among two geodesic domes and a private patio. The 364-square-foot main dome features a bedroom that can accommodate up to four guests, as well as a kitchenette and lounge area. The bathroom, equipped with a bathtub and shower, is located in a separate dome.

LULU Glamping, which claims to be first glamping experience in South Florida, also provides amenities to experience the surrounding greenery to the fullest. On top of tanning lounge chairs, each patio also has its own private hot tub, outdoor dining pergolas, and barbecue area. All of this is in complete privacy created by strategically positioning each glamping site among bushes and trees.

The clever design of LULU Glamping's geodesic domes make them a luxurious front row seat to stargazing. Thanks to their immersive design—particularly, their expansive 15-feet-wide skylights—you can lay back and marvel at the night sky. During the day, there are also plenty of things to do, like exploring the nature trails to observe flora and fauna or practicing yoga in the great outdoors.

Paying tribute to the local habitats, sustainability is at the heart of LULU Glamping. “Our domes have a minimal environmental impact,” the company assures potential guests, “consuming 50% less energy for heating and cooling compared to conventional structures.” They also acknowledge the challenges a tropical area such as South Florida presents, so each dome is also hurricane-proof.

LULU Glamping is opening its doors in November 2023. You can now book your stay through Indiegogo and have access to a special price. To stay up to date, you can follow LULU Glamping on Instagram.

Studio City Resort in Macau by ZHA

Macau's Hollywood-inspired Studio City resort opened its doors in 2015 and was so successful that it hired Zaha Hadid Architects for an expansion. Now, one of two hotels planned during Phase Two has opened to the public. Inspired by the rich detailing and bold geometries of the Art Deco era, the W Macau is a 557-room luxury hotel.

The stunning design recalls the signature craftsmanship of Art Deco with three gradations of glass that form external fins. These shapes highlight the vertical nature of the 40-story hotel, and the glass acts to reduce glare and solar heat gain for the comfort of guests.

Guests will have plenty of leisure and entertainment amenities to keep them busy. In addition to cafés, restaurants, a pool, a spa, and a gym, there is even a recording studio for guests.

The W Macau is just one element of ZHA's expansive plans for Phase Two. Sprawling over 62 acres, the vision for Phase Two also includes one of Asia's largest indoor water parks, extensive meeting spaces, and a cinema to complement the resort's existing theme.

The plans won the BREEAM Asia Awards 2021, and with a full opening planned for 2024, all eyes will be watching as the rest of the complex opens to the public.

Shrek's Swamp Airbnb in the hills of the Scottish Highlands

It's been over 20 years since the first Shrek film debuted, and it is still a popular animated movie for many fans. Now, there's a new way to experience one of the most iconic settings of the series. Airbnb is offering a one-of-a-kind stay at Shrek's Swamp, a recreation of the one seen in the animated films.

Just like the original, this real-life version features a rustic cabin tucked underneath the roots of an unusually large tree stump. In the front, there are several signs warning about the presence of an ogre, as well as an outdoor shower. The interior possesses the same charming decor with wooden furniture and the presence of more tree roots sprawling up the walls and across the ceiling. There's even a cozy fireplace by the dining set.

“Nestled deep within the forests of the Scottish Highlands and accented with the cozy comforts Shrek has accumulated over the years, the swamp offers a retreat like no other,” the listing states. “This mud-laden, moss-covered, murky-watered oasis is a perfectly snug spot to escape from village life and embrace the beauty of nature.” It goes on to list some of the desirable features this accommodation has like Shrek's trusted outhouse and “earwax candlelight.”

In keeping with the rustic charm of this cottage, there is no Wi-Fi, TV, kitchen, washing machine, or air conditioning. Just like Shrek's fantasy swamp, this one is advertised as a secluded retreat, encouraging people to enjoy the natural beauty of Scotland. Food is provided by the owners of the property, and a concierge will help travelers make their way to and from this undisclosed location.

You can book your stay at Shrek's Swamp via Airbnb. Booking opens on October 13 at 6 p.m. BST / 12 p.m. EST.

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time? Well, there's a place that will immediately transport you back 100 years for the night. After completing a $19 million renovation, The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo presents completely restored train carriages from the 1920s and 1960s which have been redesigned as guest rooms in the style of their era.

The one-of-a-kind accommodations are located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Designer Jenny Bukovec converted the interiors of the train cars into luxurious retreats, using inspiration from the 20s and 60s to make them an immersive experience. The 1920s cars, for instance, feature Tiffany glass pendants, while the 1960s rooms are modeled after midcentury modern aesthetics. From the wallpaper to the eclectic furniture, no detail was spared in making the carriages a visual delight. “The hotel encapsulates the nostalgia and allure of rail travel's heyday, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a memorable and immersive experience in the heart of Chattanooga's Southside,” Jake Lamstein, owner of The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo, says.

While the appeal of the hotel is its vintage charm, the renovations ensure that each room includes modern amenities as well. For instance, all bathrooms are stocked with toiletries by The Botanist & The Chemist, and the beds feature Italian linens. Additionally, the rooms come with a smart TV as well as USB charging stations. Outside, guests can also enjoy a large swimming pool, a sundeck, and a fire pit. There's also an on-site restaurant called Elsie's Daughter, which serves Southern cuisine. Every stay here is a retreat from modern life and a glimpse into the past. “It reflects the spirit of rail travel by inviting guests to embark on a journey, not just to their destination, but also through time,” Lamstein adds. “That spirit of adventure and elegance permeates every aspect of the hotel's design and guest experience.”

The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo opens on October 31, 2023. You can make reservations to experience the heyday of rail travel via their website.

Nestled deep in the forest of Idaho, several fire towers are being transformed into unique stays where guests can immerse themselves in nature. MoonPass Lookouts is the brainchild of Kirstie Wolfe, who is known among the Airbnb community for her collection of eclectic lodging options. Now, she's expanding her reach and offering supporters a chance to be among the first to book their stay at her latest project.

This elevated lodging adventure provides an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature. The 30-foot towers sit on 55 acres of land, providing solace and privacy for anyone looking to escape the stresses of everyday life. The custom-built fire lookout towers have smart glass roofs that provide an incredible view of the stars. And during the day, the glass can turn opaque to block UV rays and keep interior temperatures at a comfortable level. For warmth, a wood-burning stove keeps things cozy as you stargaze.

Each cabin is fully equipped with a kitchen, a full-size bed, and a bathroom. There's even a luxurious sauna situated at ground level next to the towers. Surrounded by scenic trails and located in close proximity to a pond, there are plenty of activities for outdoor lovers.

Open 365 days a year, MoonPass Lookouts provides a Snowcat service for winter access. So whether you want to soar above the snowy trees or prefer your vacation in the spring, there are no restrictions.

Over on Indiegogo, MoonPass Lookouts is currently taking early bookings. Reduced prices are available, and those booking longer stays will be given priority when it comes time to select dates. With no expiration date on the booking and the ability to transfer the reservation to Wolfe's other unique Idaho properties, guests are given a guarantee that they will have a memorable vacation.

MoonPass Lookouts is wrapping up its booking campaign on July 14, 2023, and prices go up with each passing day, so if you are interested, be sure to make your pledge now.

Two hundred and forty acres of the southern Utah desert are being transformed into a glamorous glamping experience called OutpostX. Ten units with four different concepts cater to adventurous souls who are seeking a dreamlike vacation under the stars. After two years in development, construction is 80% complete and OutpostX is taking their first reservations on Indiegogo, with the intention of having stays begin in August.

Supporters can select stays at different types of lodging. One-bedroom options include the Zen Domes, which let you sleep until the stars thanks to 360 one-way reflective windows. There’s also the Sky Lodge, which has the feel of a treehouse in Bali with a private deck, drawbridge, and king-sized bed that hangs from the ceiling.

Two iterations of cave dwellings, the Cave Villa and Cave Lux, provide another type of experience. These two-bedroom options have beds on rails that allow guests to sleep indoors or under the stars. Panoramic windows and a bubble skylight allow guests to enjoy the outdoors even while relaxing inside.

All of the lodging options have a kitchenette and air conditioning, so there's no problem escaping the desert heat. There are also plenty of on-site amenities, including a private spa with a sauna, hot clay bath, a common area with hot tubs, an area for pottery making, in-ground trampolines, sand cruisers, and refrigerators stocked with whole foods. An on-site caretaker is also available to help guests make their stay memorable and, given its location nestled close to seven national parks, there is no shortage of nature to explore.

Thanks to its solar power, well, and septic systems, OutpostX is fully off-grid and self-sufficient. In a secondary phase, the creators will be building a 100,000-gallon water reservoir and poplar forest, using mycelium and carbon to create a lush forest that attracts wildlife and retains moisture. The lake bed will trickle into a delta of nourished soil and create a sustainable ecosystem of wildlife without taking water from the aquifer.

Creator Travis Chambers has previous experience constructing unique hospitality stays and was excited to bring his vision to Utah.

“Having visited places like Tulum, the Sahara Desert, and the Middle East, I have always been struck by the distinct atmosphere and unique sense of place that these locations offer,” he shares. “This inspired me to create a space that deviates from cookie-cutter principles often seen in U.S. architecture. OutpostX is a testament to that inspiration, offering a lodging experience that transports guests to a new and exciting world.”

When OutpostX begins taking public reservations, stays will range between $350 to $1,100 per night, depending on the lodging option. Through the Indiegogo campaign, supporters will get a 50% discount, with stays beginning at $175 a night at the Sky Lodge.

Pets are welcome at OutpostX, and supporters will be able to book their trip up to 16 months in advance once stays begin in August. The campaign will close the last week of June, so book now while there's still time.

Luxury Resort in Thailand Takes Design Cues From the Golden Age of Train Travel

Khao Yai Resort in Bangkok, Thailand

If you're enthralled with the romantic notion of train travel, then the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort in Thailand is the place for you. The resort is located in the Nakhon Ratchasima province, Pak Chong district, and invites you to explore the “golden age of train travel” through its idyllic accommodations and surrounding natural beauty. There are even upcycled train carriages included in the resort design.

The architectural scheme was created by architect and interior designer Bill Bensley. He was inspired by the area’s history of rail transportation to Northeast Thailand during King Rama V’s Reign, which lasted from 1868 to 1910. Upon arrival, you’ll check in at an area styled like a ticket counter; it's complete with a traditional stationmaster bell that rings to welcome you. The interior is decorated with railway memorabilia—think vintage trunks and old tickets.

Once you’ve completed the check-in process, you’ll be escorted to one of the 45 rooms in Khao Yai Resort’s main buildings. They too are inspired by train travel, and the walls are adorned with pieces recalling the vintage railway signs once seen around the province. Corridors with curved ceilings and doorways make you feel like you’re stepping into a train car, and wall treatments in the bedrooms are meant to look like windows. The faux windows have landscape-inspired artwork that will make you feel like you're looking at the passing terrain.

The beauty of Bensley's design lies in its subtlety. It's often a wink to train travel, and it doesn't feel like you're staying in a themed room. Rather, you are treated to the elegance of a space that pays homage to the past without feeling cheesy.

In addition to the grand decor, Khao Yai Resort boasts curated experiences where you can visit Baan Sa Nam Sai, one of the oldest communities in the area. You can later enjoy a formal afternoon tea in a heritage railcar and then indulge in delicious farm-to-table dining at Somying’s Kitchen with ingredients from local purveyors.
