What did your elementary school music program look like? Did you have a particularly passionate teacher who made the class incredibly memorable? Perhaps you were given an instrument that you had never seen before and were able to create amazing sounds with it. Whatever the answer, prepare to be humbled.

A Reddit post depicting a group of elementary-age children absolutely crushing a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's classic 1980 song “Crazy Train” recently went viral. In the video, a classroom of kids expertly play xylophones, drums, keyboards, and a single bass guitar. The result is incredible.  They even stay on beat for the entire song without the use of sheet music.

The video was originally published on YouTube in 2012.  At the time, the kids were 4th-6th graders participating in the Louisville Leopard Percussionists, which is a non-profit organization “offering extracurricular music opportunities to local children at little or no cost.” The program has been operating in the Louisville, Kentucky area since 1993, and it is clear that the kids are incredibly passionate about what they are doing. Their energy is truly infectious. Even Ozzy Osbourne took notice, saying, “Myself, my whole family, and my fans all loved your rendition of “Crazy Train.” Keep up the good work!” In 2018, a group of children participating in the program even had the chance to perform for Osbourne and his family.

Since the original video is over a decade old, one can only wonder what the kids featured in it are up to now. How many of them have decided to pursue music, either as a hobby or as a career? Judging by the amount of talent captured in the video, it isn't a stretch that say that any one of those kids could go as far as they want. As one Redditor said, “Amazing. That teacher changed every one of those kids' lives.”

Incredible 4K Footage of Sweeping Starling Murmuration Over the Yorkshire Wetlands

Starling murmurations are one of the most mind-blowing phenomena of the animal kingdom. Before dusk, thousands of these birds fly in a group, twisting and swirling to form shape-shifting dark clouds. Wildlife artist and filmmaker Robert E. Fuller captured sweeping 4K footage of a winter starling murmuration over the Ripon City Wetlands in Yorkshire, England. The spectacular video offers a front-row seat to this breathtaking natural spectacle.

“Starling murmurations are one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles. Studies suggest the birds congregate in great swirling masses to confuse predators,” explains Fuller on his YouTube Channel. “This was filmed at Ripon City Wetlands, a wildlife reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.”

The starlings make it to this area of the United Kingdom during the winter to escape the colder weather of Scandinavia. There, they are able to congregate for the season before disbanding in the spring. These formations work against predators because it makes it harder for them to focus on a single individual or simply scares them off, given the sheer size of the black cloud of birds. This is a prime example that there truly is power in numbers.

For all the beauty of these murmurations, their inner workings remain a mystery for ornithologists, especially as to how communication works among the birds. “Scientists say each starling keeps an eye on six to nine of those flying nearest to them,” Jono Leadley, North Region Manager for The Wildlife Trust, tells the Harrrogate Advertiser. “If their neighbors move, then they follow, creating a wave without hitting each other. Everything about the experience, from the sound to the synchronized aerial dance, is a staggeringly beautiful spectacle.”

The Las Vegas Sphere is truly a technological marvel. The outdoor exosphere is a mind-bending orb, shining 24/7 with a never-ending stream of images. And on the inside, it's a one-of-a-kind venue where a concert can be turned into an immersive experience. The first band to give it a go was U2, who set the bar high for any following acts. After that, it was Phish's turn at the Sphere. The American rock band took full advantage of the 360º venue with psychedelic visuals that enhanced their music. While the shows are now over, videographer Jay Christensen offers a peek into this unique spectacle with his drone footage.

Christensen's video takes the viewer through the whole experience of attending a concert at the Sphere. We see the exterior display announcing the night's show as we fly over the attendees' heads. After taking the stairs with other fans, the camera expertly flies through a circular sculpture before taking us to the real treat—the massive auditorium, where Phish is playing under a kaleidoscopic background.

The drone then flies from up above right into the band, giving us a front row seat to their performance. By twirling around them, we also see their point of view—the thrill of being in front of thousands of people. Phish only performed four shows at the venue, but this short video truly captures the hypnotic quality this residency had.

Shooting a video like this is no easy feat. That's why Christensen shared a behind-the-scenes clip. He also had the chance to capture U2's residency, and the clip shows him setting up shop outside and inside the venue. His team then carefully designs the path the drone will fly on, and follows it live with the help of a head set. While he has shot dozens of drone videos, the excitement seems to be never ending for this videographer.

To stay up to date with new thrilling drone videos by Christensen, you can follow him on Instagram and YouTube.

16 Rare Videos of Iconic Artists at Work, From Monet to Matisse to Dalí

Thanks to technology and social media, art lovers can see how their favorite artists work. Many contemporary artists post video footage or time-lapse videos of their creative process, giving us precious insight into their creative minds. And while it may be rarer, did you know that we have similar types of videos from some of the greatest artists in history?

Since moving video was developed at the end of the 19th century, it has been used to document life as we know it. Many artists have allowed video footage to be taken either while they were working or in an interview setting where they explain their artistic philosophy. From Claude Monet painting in his garden to Georgia O'Keeffe's reflection on her career, there is so much to learn.

While the footage might be rare, plenty of it has been uploaded to YouTube, and it just takes a bit of searching to unearth these hidden gems. We've done a lot of the heavy lifting and found some incredible videos for you, which can be viewed below. Standouts include a 74-year-old Renoir struggling through the pain of rheumatoid arthritis to keep painting. Taken in 1915, the video shows Renoir's 14-year-old son Claude placing a paintbrush in his father's hand, which had been permanently deformed by the illness.

Roy Lichtenstein's 1966 interview, in which he confronts criticism about Pop Art, is a fascinating look at how the artist views his work and its role in society. There are also some fun oddities, like Salvador Dalí painting a rhinoceros at the Paris Zoo and Keith Haring executing a live painting during a television show in Italy.

Whether you love watching artists in action or enjoy hearing them discuss the theory behind their art, you'll enjoy this different look at Western art history.

There is a lot of rare footage of artists at work to be found; here are some of our favorites, from Monet to Hopper to Haring.

Claude Monet, 1915

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1915

Auguste Rodin, 1915

Wassily Kandinsky, 1926

Henri Matisse, 1946

Pablo Picasso, 1950

Jackson Pollock, 1951

Salvador Dali, 1955

Marcel Duchamp, 1956

Alberto Giacometti, 1965

Edward Hopper, 1965

Roy Lichtenstein, 1966

Georgia O'Keeffe, 1977

Keith Harring, 1984

Gerhard Richter, 2011

(Please note that this list reflects what’s been made available, hence the lack of female representation commensurate with the absence of their public exposure throughout art history.)

Orangutans are majestic primates who share 97% of their DNA with humans. These deliberate and capable animals are known for their ingenuity and ability to use simple logic. Unfortunately, both Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered due to deforestation, fires, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. Luckily, there are organizations like Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia (BOSA) that are working for the survival of the species.

While the non-profit works to protect existing rainforest habitat and rescue, rehabilitate, and reintroduce orangutans into the wild, a large part of its mission is to educate the public about these incredible animals. BOSA often posts videos that show the remarkable behavior of these primates, providing an important reminder of what we stand to lose if we don't come to their rescue.

In one video, we join volunteers as they meet up with rescued orangutans at a sanctuary in Borneo. It's incredible to see the primates in their own habitat, following the boat as it floats down the river and gratefully extending a hand to accept the food offered. Another informational video shows how orangutans build their nests. Their careful foraging and skillful weaving are just further demonstration of their intelligence.

Part of the important work BOSA does is to equip orphaned orangutans with the life skills they need to survive in the wild. It's a critical issue, as many orangutans lose their families at a young age. In this “jungle school,” orphaned orangutans learn to forage, recognize predators, build nests, and much more. Once they “graduate,” they are then able to be released into the wild. Clips of these orphaned orangutans fill the organization's Instagram feed and are an incredible look at how these primates learn.

With fewer than 14,000 Sumatran orangutans and 57,000 Bornean orangutans left in the wild, BOSA's work is more important than ever. Orangutans face an uphill battle. In just 16 years, from 1999 to 2015, more than half of Borneo's orangutan population was wiped out. According to BOSA, without effective habitat protection, the species will be extinct in 10 to 20 years. By donating to these organizations and learning more about these primates, you can do your part to turn back the tide.

Orangutans are incredible primates that are closely related to humans.

Unfortunately, both Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered.

By posting videos of their behaviors, Borneo Survival Australia hopes to raise awareness.

The non-profit runs a “jungle school” to teach orphaned orangutans life skills.

Then, they are released into the wild.

Have you ever wondered what your pet gets up to all day? One TikToker (known simply as ih.gcj) recently decided that they were tired of pondering and attached a small camera to their cat's collar to keep track of what their daily routine was like. The results may not have been quite what they expected, but they are extremely entertaining nonetheless.

Thanks to the camera, internet users were treated to a video of a high-speed chase from the cat's point of view. It shows our feline tour guide chasing another cat outside of an apartment complex. The purr-suit is seriously intense, filled with hissing, panting, and a brief scrap between the two cats, during which the camera goes black and all we can hear are the noises of an active cat fight. The animals run beneath cars, leap over mopeds, and streak across grass and pavement at breakneck speed, all in a dazzling display of purr-kour.

It’s hard to look away during the chase, anticipating a final showdown between the cats with an ultimate victor; but, unfortunately, the video cuts off before we see whether or not the cat successfully catches up to its foe. It's hard to say what the offending feline did to enrage the other so deeply, but hopefully fights like these are rare and both cats got away unscathed. Regardless, the video certainly took watchers on a wild ride. Many viewers point out the similarities between the captured footage and scenes from nail-biting action movies; some even argue it's better than most blockbusters out there.

If you found yourself unable to look away, you're in luck. It looks like the pet owner’s entire TikTok account is dedicated to addictive videos such as these. Their cat is undeniably the faceless star of this POV show and strangers around the world are tuning in to see what mischief they get up to next.

Whenever social security is brought up, as with most economic topics, it is often dismissed as being too complicated to understand, let alone fix. However, economist Kathryn Anne Edwards, known on TikTok as keds_economist, pushes back against this idea in one of her recent videos. She said that a few easy policy fixes could greatly improve the system.

“When I say Social Security is fixable, I mean it is crazy fixable,” Edwards boldly states.

In the video, she starts by explaining the economics behind Social Security and discussing the shortfall that could affect it someday. However, she carefully points out that the shortfall is not nearly as scary as it has been made out to be.

“The Office of the Actuary of Social Security is in charge of its 75-year projections from which we know that Social Security has a 75-year shortfall,” says Edwards, who works as a freelance economic policy consultant. “What that means is that when the Office of the Actuary projects tax collections for the next 75 years and then projects benefit payments for the next 75 years, it subtracts the two, and there's a difference. We aren't going to collect enough taxes to pay out what we have in benefits. This is an actuarial shortfall, technically a long-range actuarial shortfall. That's an important distinction because the program is not in shortfall now and has not been for the past 40 years.”

Social Security Concept

Photo: larryhw/Depositphotos

She goes on to explain that if the Actuary of Social Security changed the provisions, they would be able to fix the problem immediately. Contrary to popular belief, Social Security is not in dire straits—far from it, actually. According to Edwards, even if the shortfall happened tomorrow, Social Security would simply deliver reduced payments until the problem is solved rather than ceasing to exist.

“Even though Social Security has been on incredibly sound financial footing on a per-year basis, for the last 40 years, for the last 30 years, people have been telling you that it's going to run out of money one day,” she says. “[But] it's saved trillions of dollars for social for retirement in the future… Congress is not good at fixing problems in a timely fashion. But that does not mean that those problems are not fixable, or that social security isn't, you know, fully capable of being there for you in a generous way.”

America has always had a unique relationship with film. Movies have shaped the United States in more ways than one, from drive-in theaters to classic blockbuster films. Amid these iconic cultural symbols, there is also a vast array of short films that have been nearly forgotten. The Prelinger Archives‘ goal is to prevent these movies from being lost in the ether.

Rick Prelinger started the archive in 1983 with a focus on preserving “ephemeral” films, which are typically educational or industrial in subject matter. Many of the films listed in the archive are from the mid-20th century and include vintage documentaries, instructional videos, political propaganda, and home videos that provide a glimpse into what life in the United States was like many decades ago. Of the 30,000 films in the Prelinger Archives, over 9,200 can be found at the Internet Archive or uploaded to the official YouTube channel.

Many of the films are as strange or campy as you might imagine, from heavily sanitized sexual education videos on puberty and dating to an uncomfortably long and detailed 31-minute tutorial on how to handle raw meat. But there are hidden gems in the vast online repository as well, including rare performance footage of Billie Holiday, playful Felix the Cat cartoons, and same-day news coverage of major historical events, including the Hindenburg explosion or the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Vintage home videos are where the collection really shines, as these tapes offer an uncensored, unedited look into the lives of everyday Americans. Watching footage of family vacations, road trips, and Christmas celebrations provides a unique glimpse into the past. While the clothes, styles, and social norms have changed drastically since many of these videos were created, they do serve as a reminder that people have always found ways to enjoy themselves and that humans have always been undeniably human. Even though it may take some digging, you are bound to find something that stands out to you in the Prelinger Archives and makes your day a little bit brighter.

The Prelinger Archives has the goal of documenting and preserving vintage films that are normally instructional, educational, or home videos.

Over 9,200 short films from the archive can be found on Internet Archive and the Prelinger Archives YouTube channel.

Did you grow up playing with LEGOs? You're definitely not alone. And though many people may grow out of piecing the iconic little plastic blocks together, there are still a significant amount of people who do remarkable things with them as adults. Some have made the bricks their main medium of choice as LEGO artists while others have maintained their playful side as impressive hobbyists who build their favorite sets. For one LEGO fan known only by their YouTube channel name, Build it with Bricks, the toy bricks are a way for them to experiment, learn, and teach viewers more about the world around us. In one of their most popular videos, they used LEGO bricks to build and demonstrate coastal sea defenses.

In the video, the creator begins by setting up a mini beach. First, they add a pile of sand at one end of an aquarium tank. Next, they assemble a wave generator out of a board of LEGO bricks hooked up to an engine. The board is wired to move back and forth. Once water is added to the tank, this mechanism is designed to push against it, simulating waves. Now that the “coast” is complete, the wave generator is turned on to show how erosion occurs. The ripples of water being pushed by the wave generator rush against the small hill of sand, chipping away at it and pulling the grains into the sea as it sways back.

To combat this erosion, Build it with Bricks constructs multiple types of barriers, each with their own varying levels of success. They constructed offshore breakers, gabions, revetments, seawalls, and more, showing their effectiveness in preventing erosion of the shore. Throughout the video, viewers are introduced to new terminology and offered a visual understanding of how structural design affects success rate. Build it with Bricks' video is a fascinating watch that is both mesmerizing and educational.

Build it with Bricks has many videos that make big concepts more understandable as LEGO creations. To keep up to date with their builds and experiments, you can subscribe to them on YouTube. In the meantime, scroll down to see the full video about sea defense.

According to a study by Priory Group, a provider of mental health care facilities, 40% of men in the UK have never spoken to anyone about their mental health. Aware of how important it is for people to check in on their loved ones, soccer team Norwich City FC released a poignant video for World Mental Health Day. The clip aims to help spot any signs of concern, challenging our conceptions of what depression may look like.

The video stars two Norwich City fans who attend several matches together. While one is quiet and aloof, the other is cheerful and outgoing. “At times, it can be obvious when someone is struggling to cope,” writes the soccer team in the caption. “But sometimes the signs are harder to spot. Check in on those around you.”

Titled “You Are Not Alone,” the short film was produced in close consultation with suicide prevention charity Samaritans. “Campaigns like #YouAreNotAlone can have a real long-lasting effect when it comes to reducing the stigma around suicide and we can't praise Norwich City's efforts enough,” said Annabel Davis, assistant director of external communications at Samaritans.

The campaign has been praised by other mental health providers, such as Mind and Heads Together, for offering a resource to increase mental health awareness.

“This is a stunningly powerful thing to watch; I would encourage any organization large or small, private or public—and indeed any individual to utilize this however they see fit to help others spread the message on the importance of checking in on the mental health of those around us,” said actor Stephen Fry, president of Mind. “The challenges faced by so many can seem like mountains, but there is truly no better message to hear than that ‘no matter how you might feel, you are not alone.'”

Since the video was released, Norwich City has received many requests to use the video to boost conversations in professional, educational, and administrative settings. Inspired by this, the club has made the video available to everyone. Those interested can send an email to youarenotalone@canaries.co.uk, and a staff member will reply with a download link and information on supporting resources.
