Incredible 4K Footage of Sweeping Starling Murmuration Over the Yorkshire Wetlands

Starling murmurations are one of the most mind-blowing phenomena of the animal kingdom. Before dusk, thousands of these birds fly in a group, twisting and swirling to form shape-shifting dark clouds. Wildlife artist and filmmaker Robert E. Fuller captured sweeping 4K footage of a winter starling murmuration over the Ripon City Wetlands in Yorkshire, England. The spectacular video offers a front-row seat to this breathtaking natural spectacle.

“Starling murmurations are one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles. Studies suggest the birds congregate in great swirling masses to confuse predators,” explains Fuller on his YouTube Channel. “This was filmed at Ripon City Wetlands, a wildlife reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.”

The starlings make it to this area of the United Kingdom during the winter to escape the colder weather of Scandinavia. There, they are able to congregate for the season before disbanding in the spring. These formations work against predators because it makes it harder for them to focus on a single individual or simply scares them off, given the sheer size of the black cloud of birds. This is a prime example that there truly is power in numbers.

For all the beauty of these murmurations, their inner workings remain a mystery for ornithologists, especially as to how communication works among the birds. “Scientists say each starling keeps an eye on six to nine of those flying nearest to them,” Jono Leadley, North Region Manager for The Wildlife Trust, tells the Harrrogate Advertiser. “If their neighbors move, then they follow, creating a wave without hitting each other. Everything about the experience, from the sound to the synchronized aerial dance, is a staggeringly beautiful spectacle.”

The Las Vegas Sphere is truly a technological marvel. The outdoor exosphere is a mind-bending orb, shining 24/7 with a never-ending stream of images. And on the inside, it's a one-of-a-kind venue where a concert can be turned into an immersive experience. The first band to give it a go was U2, who set the bar high for any following acts. After that, it was Phish's turn at the Sphere. The American rock band took full advantage of the 360º venue with psychedelic visuals that enhanced their music. While the shows are now over, videographer Jay Christensen offers a peek into this unique spectacle with his drone footage.

Christensen's video takes the viewer through the whole experience of attending a concert at the Sphere. We see the exterior display announcing the night's show as we fly over the attendees' heads. After taking the stairs with other fans, the camera expertly flies through a circular sculpture before taking us to the real treat—the massive auditorium, where Phish is playing under a kaleidoscopic background.

The drone then flies from up above right into the band, giving us a front row seat to their performance. By twirling around them, we also see their point of view—the thrill of being in front of thousands of people. Phish only performed four shows at the venue, but this short video truly captures the hypnotic quality this residency had.

Shooting a video like this is no easy feat. That's why Christensen shared a behind-the-scenes clip. He also had the chance to capture U2's residency, and the clip shows him setting up shop outside and inside the venue. His team then carefully designs the path the drone will fly on, and follows it live with the help of a head set. While he has shot dozens of drone videos, the excitement seems to be never ending for this videographer.

To stay up to date with new thrilling drone videos by Christensen, you can follow him on Instagram and YouTube.

The image of a house attached to thousands of colorful balloons and floating into the air has become an iconic symbol of the beloved Pixar film Up. Owned by the grumpy Carl Fredricksen, this quaint home has made movie lovers dream of one day taking off to their bucket-list destination. Now, Airbnb is making part of this wish come true. In honor of the movie's 15th anniversary, the company has faithfully recreated the house from Up—and it even floats!

Rather than make their way to a remote region of South America, those who wish to stay in the Up house will have to travel to the red rocks of Abiquiu, New Mexico. While Airbnb has fitted it with 8,000 balloons, what truly makes the illusion come to life is a crane that rises the dwelling several feet above the ground.

“I don’t always like visitors, but I guess it’s pretty nice to have them now that it’s just me and Dug. So, come stay in my cozy home I made with my dear Ellie,” writes Airbnb, in the voice of Fredricksen. “My greatest adventures have happened here, and I learned that the best ones are always with someone you love, so bring your pals to kickstart your very own Adventure Book and watch as my house drifts off before you depart.”

As if the sight of the floating house wasn't breathtaking on its own, Airbnb has truly captured the spirit of the Fredricksen's home as depicted in the movie. Visitors will see Carl and Ellie's lounge chairs, photographs of the couple around the living room, little Russell's backpack by the staircase, the lovely mailbox with hand prints by the porch, and even Dug's food bowl.

Once you're done exploring the house, there are plenty of activities you can partake in. By day, you can help Mr. Fredricksen by checking his mail before preparing a picnic basket and filling your own Adventure Book. At night, you can gather in the lawn to stargaze with your party.

The Up house is part of Airbnb's Icons collection, made up of one-of-kind international experiences. Other adventures in the Icons collection include a stay at Paris' Musée d’Orsay during the 2024 Olympic Games, a night in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy, and a visit to the X-Men mansion in Westchester, New York.

If you want to book any of these experiences, make sure to sign up on the listing's Airbnb page. Some are under $100 per person, while others, like Mr. Fredricksen's home, are free. Submissions for the Up house close on May 14. Afterwards, Airbnb will select the winning guests to finalize their bookings. You can sign up here.

Dogs and cats have been human's most popular pet companions throughout history. But it turns out, another mammal could have once held a similar rank. A 1,500-year-old burial site found in Patagonia, Argentina, features a human skeleton laid to rest alongside a fox. This unique placement sparked questions about the bond these two may have shared during their lifetimes.

A group of scientists launched an investigation on this archeological site, publishing their findings in the Royal Society Open Science. The human-fox pair is part of the larger archeological site of Cañada Seca. Originally discovered in 1991, it contains the remains of at least 24 members of a hunter-gatherer community.

Before the research was done, even the species of the furry companion was a mystery. First thought of as an unknown canid, likely a gray fox. The researchers determined that the fox was of the Dusicyon avus type, a now-extinct species that roamed South America until around 500 years ago.

By conducting in-depth genetic, morphological, and isotopic analyses of the ancient bones, they were not only able to learn about the fox, but also the relationship to its human. A carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis in the fox bones revealed that it had a a human-like diet, as it had more greens and less meat than a wild fox would usually eat. This pointed to a pattern of “systematic feeding,” meaning that the fox was “a valuable individual” and likely “a companion or a pet for the hunter-gatherers during the late Holocene.”

The carbon analysis of the fox's bones also indicate that it was buried at around the same time as its grave mate. “Although the reasons for its inclusion in a mortuary context remain unclear, the most plausible explanation is that this fox was a valuable companion to the hunter-gatherer groups,” write the study authors. “Its strong bond with human individuals during its life would have been the primary factor for its placement as a grave good after the death of its owners or the people with whom it interacted.”

As for the fox species as a whole, researchers believe their extinction may be attributed to a combination of climate change and human interference—contrary to the thought that they disappeared after breeding with domestic dogs. They conclude: “While hybridization may have influenced population dynamics to some extent, its contribution to the extinction event appears to be limited by the lack of fertile offspring.”

Many people who work from home love the extra time that gives them with their beloved pets. But as anyone with a cat will tell you, the situation can be a little tricky. Best case scenario, they may just lie next to you on the ground or perhaps settle on your lap. Most likely, though, kitties can be much quirkier (and sometimes naughtier) than that and they like to block screens and sprawl across keyboards. But what if they had a dedicated space next to you without disturbing your work day? The Desk Nest Cat Bed may be the answer.

The company behind this new piece of pet furniture, Quantum Mango, describes the Desk Nest Cat Bed as a “lifestyle upgrade for people who want to keep their beloved cats close without interruptions, compromising workspace or comfort.” This round bed rises over your desk, standing 12 inches tall on a 4.5-inch round metal base. Despite its tiny size, it can hold up to 25 pounds, and it is able to spin a full 360º around.

The Desk Nest Cat Bed is also easy to set up, without the need to drill or permanently modify your desk. All you have to do is attach the bed to the edge of your desk, adjust it to where you want it to be, and then just place your cat. For extra safety and coziness, the bed features raised walls and a padded cushion.

While it was designed with people who work from home in mind, the Desk Nest Cat Bed is also suited for students and gamers. Its clever design lets your furry friend get comfortable and stay close while keeping your workspace tidy and optimized. Its stylish design also comes in two colors—walnut and white oak—allowing it fit right in with just about any office decor.

This Desk Nest Cat Bed is so beloved that its fundraising campaign has already been fully funded. In fact, it was funded in only six minutes! If you'd like to get one for your feline coworker, you can buy it for a special price on Kickstarter.

What if your cat had a dedicated space next to you at your home office? Take a look at the clever Desk Nest Cat Bed.

The creative possibilities of dance are seemingly endless given the range of things the human body can do. And it goes without saying, but the more control and flexibility a dancer has, the more moves they can integrate into their choreography. Indian dance troupe B Unique Crew is a prime example of this. The group as a whole offers stunning performances, but this is only possibly due to each individual member’s abilities and especially their out-of-the-box movements. Once you watch them in action, it’ll come as no surprise that their mesmerizing shows have taken over talent shows around the globe.

B Unique Crew was founded in the streets of Jodhpur 12 years ago. With little access to dance lessons, they practiced tirelessly until they became world-class artists. Their performances are not just about the moves, as they incorporate storytelling, costumes, and hypnotic visuals.

While they've quietly gained followers throughout the years, their breakthrough moment took place during an appearance on a show called Hunarbaaz Desh Ki Shaan. There, they danced to a remix of “Ami Je Tomar,” a song from the Bollywood comedy horror Bhool Bhulaiya. Building on the eerie elements of the film, they took the judges and fellow contestants by surprise.

As if their exact synchronicity and precise symmetrical moves weren't impressive enough, B Unique Crew had an ace up their sleeve. The key element of spookiness is one of the dancers, who appears to be double jointed and able to turn his head all the way back, very much like an owl. As he does this, he is able to move the rest of his body as he is carried by the others. And so, a dance performance becomes a fully rounded chilling spectacle that earned praise from Bollywood actors and dancers.

“It was an extraordinary moment for us, a blend of joy and overwhelming emotion,” B-Unique Crew told indianexpress.com. “Hrithik Roshan, a legendary figure in the field of dancing, had taken notice of our work and appreciated it. To receive acknowledgement from someone we have long admired and looked up to was nothing short of surreal. It reaffirmed our belief that we are on the right path, that our relentless dedication and hard work have borne fruit. It was a validation of our journey and a reminder that dreams do come true with perseverance and passion.”

B Unique Crew has also been leaving a mark on European talent shows, but they aim to continue dazzling people. “As we look towards the future, our aspirations soar even higher,” they say. “We are determined to take our unique style to the forefront of the global stage, particularly aiming to showcase our talents on platforms like America’s Got Talent (AGT).”

The Apple Vision is widely considered one of the biggest tech releases of the last few years. This innovative headset provides a pristine, real-time depiction of the surrounding environment while allowing the user to launch apps as floating screens around them. Many have tried it in different places, like on a plane, on the subway, and now in an operating room. Brazilian surgeon Dr. Bruno B. Gobbato recently shared his experience using this device during a surgery, showing its possibilities beyond leisure and entertainment.

Dr. Gobbato is an orthopedist and traumatologist who specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery. The procedure took place at the Jaraguá Hospital, a city located in southern Brazil. There, the specialist performed surgery to fix a shoulder tendons injury using the arthroscopy technique—and his Apple Vision Pro.

This arthroscopy method involves inserting a camera into the joint, allowing the surgeon to operate without the need to completely cut the shoulder open. The camera was then connected to Apple Vision Pro, giving the doctor the possibility to follow a feed of a magnified view of the procedure on a large screen with ultra-high resolution. Next to this screen, he also had a 3D model of a shoulder pop up within his field of vision, as well as patient reports in the Notes app.

Gobbato's main concern was how the Apple Vision Pro camera would process the images in real-time given that there was not enough lighting in the operating room. While Apple claims that the see-through latency of the Vision pro is 12ms, which is extremely low, they've also warned that using the device in low light conditions may increase the risk of collision with objects in the vicinity. The company also advises against using it around sharp objects and any other situations requiring attention to safety. However, Dr. Gobbato, a medical professional, has praised the device, especially for its convenience.

Though this is an incredible occurrence, it is not the first time an Apple Vision Pro has been used in the operating room. In March, a team at Cromwell Hospital in London used the headset to repair a patient's spine. They used it for a similar purpose—superimposing virtual screens and having key information at hand. “It eliminates human error. It eliminates the guesswork,” Suvi Verho, lead scrub nurse at London Independent Hospital, told the Daily Mail. “It gives you confidence in surgery.”

The Vision Pro also allowed Gobbato to record the surgery from his point of view, which you can watch above—please keep in mind that it is video footage of a surgery, so viewer discretion is advised.

Chicago is home to dozens of attractions that draw thousands of locals and tourists every year. And yet, none have caused the commotion the Chicago Rat Hole sparked a few months ago. While the buzz may have died down with time, the rat hole still prompted visits and tributes. Unfortunately, its tale has come to an end…at least for now. A few days ago, the city of Chicago extracted the sidewalk section where a rodent left its mark.

“Crews removed and successfully preserved the square of sidewalk containing the famous ‘Chicago Rat Hole’ and are storing it temporarily while its future location is determined,” a spokesperson for the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) said in a statement. “Given the notoriety, the goal was to remove it intact.”

The Chicago Rat Hole was located in the Roscoe Village neighborhood. The residents claimed that the dent had existed for decades, but it wasn't until January 2024 that it went viral on Twitter. People quickly made their way to West Roscoe Street, building a makeshift shrine, complete with a photo of a mouse, candles, and a cardboard coffin. Hundreds of eager visitors would stretch down the block. People paid their respects by leaving coins, stuffed toys, flowers, and wacky objects, like pills and store coupons.

Understandably, neighbors were upset by the trash and food littered at the site, as well as the noise made by visitors well into the night. Some people tried to take the matter into their own hands, filling and digging out the hole on multiple occasions since January. After months of issues, the alderman’s office asked CDOT to determine if the section of sidewalk met the criteria for repair and removal. Aware of the world-famous status of the rat hole, they aimed to save it in one piece, although they weren't sure if they'd be able to at first.

Now, the concrete slab with the rat hole is safely being stored by the CDOT while its future is determined. Although some would like it to go to a museum, it's unclear where it could it be displayed next, if at all. “There’s discussion about what could or should happen with it,” Paul Sajovec, chief of staff for 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack, who represents the area, told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a piece of city infrastructure.”

When The Sports Bra first made international headlines, it was because of its daring concept. This sports bar, located in Portland, Oregon, vouched to only show women's sports. This was inspired due to the gap in coverage and attention female athletes and women's sports leagues get in comparison to their male counterparts. While some didn't believe in this concept, a community quickly thrived and grew beyond its walls. Now, after two years of operation, The Sports Bra has become so successful that they recently announced plans to franchise and expand.

“This is an exhilarating time for women’s sports, and The Sports Bra has proven the strong need for more places to celebrate them,” says Jenny Nguyen, founder and CEO of The Sports Bra. “I envision a future full of Sports Bras everywhere doing what we do best: supporting women.” Nguyen opened the bar in 2022, investing her life savings in the idea. It as reported to have returned $1 million in just eight months.

The 776 foundation, an organization led by entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, is now making an investment in The Sports Bra. Ohanian is one of the co-founders of Reddit and part owner of Angel City Football Club in the NWSL. Ohanian is also married to tennis superstar Serena Williams, and is a founder at Seven Seven Six, self-described as “a tech company that deploys venture capital.”

“At Seven Seven Six, we’re enthusiastic about the incredible advancement in women’s sports,” says Ohanian. “Our foundation is proud to back The Sports Bra, which is a welcoming place for everyone to celebrate these athletes’ feats.”

The investment in The Sports Bra comes at a great time for women's sports, with the 2024 NCAA women’s basketball tournament and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team matches breaking viewership records. But knowing that's not the end of the road, 100% of the returns from 776 Foundation’s investment will be earmarked for future donations to boost future generations of female athletes.

Nguyen says, “When I first opened The Sports Bra two years ago this month, I had no idea the impact it would have on so many so quickly. Now I can see we’re just getting started. With the support of Alexis and 776, we plan to bring The Bra to cities across the country and beyond, and continue to invest in our mission.”

For some creatives, there is art everywhere—you just need to know where to look.  The work of visual artist Rudy Willingham is a testament to this. By cleverly using paper cutouts, he transforms ordinary objects into whimsical scenes, many populated by pop culture characters.

In the world of Willingham, every place, every item, but especially every motion, is filled with creative possibilities. A sushi conveyor belt can be transformed into a real-world Mario Kart; a potato in the supermarket can be turned into a sandworm, bravely being ridden by Dune‘s Paul Atreides; and a washing machine can easily transform into a turntable with the clever placement of a needle and a vinyl record label.

When asked about his creative process, Willingham told Gigantic Magazine, “Remember when you were a kid and you’d look up at the clouds and say, ‘That one looks like a dinosaur' or ‘That one looks like a guitar?' I’m doing the same thing, using a childlike imagination to transform my surroundings. The theme of my art is that everything is art. Tail lights can become Terminator eyes. A cactus can be a middle finger. A sunset can be a dress. Everyday, ordinary things can be so beautiful. You just have to look at them in the right way.”

But the real charm of Willingham's craft is that he achieves all of this with the seemingly simple resource of a paper cutout. There are no big installations, no carefully choreographed actors involved, no hi-tech setups. It's all about an artist, armed with a tiny paper figure, and a boundless imagination to connect two disparate ideas to make a new, ephemeral world come alive.

There are, though, two key elements to making this work. Willingham's exact use of perspective and the flexibility of the video media are what truly make his cutout compositions soar. It's this mix of elements that make Willingham such an exciting creator, reminding us that in an era of AI and artworks that never leave the digital realm, there is still magic to be found in the world around us.
