6-Year-Old Girl Breaks World Record for Lowest Limbo Roller Skating

Limbo skating is one sport that many people may not have heard of; but once you see it, i you’ll never forget it. The activity is a feat of athleticism and acrobatics, as it involves participants riding on roller skates underneath a low obstacle. In practice, this manifests itself in the form of the athlete basically doing the splits while pressing their body as low to the ground as possible, hence the “limbo” part of the name. Needless to say, the sport is extreme and requires a huge amount of flexibility and core strength. Surprisingly, the record for the lowest limbo skate has just been set by a 6-year-old girl.

Takshvi Vaghani, the new Guinness World Record holder from the state of Gujarat in India, made history with her impressive achievement. The record for lowest limbo skate wasn't actually measured by how low to the ground she got—instead, she became the record holder by skating for 25 meters (about 82 feet) straight. She also managed to do this while staying only 16.5 centimeters (less than 6.5 inches) above the ground.

Vaghani has been practicing her sport since she was 3, meaning that she has been doing this for half of her life. It seems that her passion has certainly paid off, as she is being labeled a limbo skating prodigy. Since it is so early on in her athletic career, one can only wonder what other accomplishments the young skater might be able to add to her repertoire in the years to come.

The video of her accomplishment recently made its way to Reddit, where the comments section is filled with praise and congratulations for the tiny titan. Some chimed in with puns, with the top comment saying, “It's a good achievement, but it was a very low bar.” Additionally, others point out that after she is done skating, she needs to get up at the end without using her hands, or else it invalidates the entire record, which certainly makes her athletic feat even more astounding.

Like many little girls, Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi grew up playing with Barbie dolls. Now, she has one designed after her. Her doll, which is part of the brand's Inspiring Women Series, was released just in time for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May.

Yamaguchi, a two-time world champion and Olympic Hall of Famer, made history at the 1992 Olympics for becoming the first Asian American woman to win an individual figure skating gold medal. The doll design captures the likeness of the skater at those Olympic games, down to the sparkling black and gold leotard and the red and white bouquet that she held atop the podium. The doll also features her signature poofy 90s style bangs that Yamaguchi was sporting at the time.

Her victory came at a time when there were very few Asian American role models, and even fewer were women. While she was competing, some people in the figure skating community were concerned about Yamaguchi's race impacting her marketability and ability to get endorsements. But despite these challenges, the skater persisted and managed to cement herself as one of the greatest American female figure skaters of all time.

“It's a huge, huge honor,” Yamaguchi told The Associated Press. “I think a lot of pride comes along with it, not just recognizing the Olympic achievement, but also being recognized during AAPI Month and following in the footsteps of some incredible women that I idolize—Anna May Wong, Maya Angelou, and Rosa Parks.”

Yamaguchi’s Barbie doll is now available for pre-order on Mattel’s website, Target, and Amazon.

Mattel recently released a Barbie doll designed after the Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

When The Sports Bra first made international headlines, it was because of its daring concept. This sports bar, located in Portland, Oregon, vouched to only show women's sports. This was inspired due to the gap in coverage and attention female athletes and women's sports leagues get in comparison to their male counterparts. While some didn't believe in this concept, a community quickly thrived and grew beyond its walls. Now, after two years of operation, The Sports Bra has become so successful that they recently announced plans to franchise and expand.

“This is an exhilarating time for women’s sports, and The Sports Bra has proven the strong need for more places to celebrate them,” says Jenny Nguyen, founder and CEO of The Sports Bra. “I envision a future full of Sports Bras everywhere doing what we do best: supporting women.” Nguyen opened the bar in 2022, investing her life savings in the idea. It as reported to have returned $1 million in just eight months.

The 776 foundation, an organization led by entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, is now making an investment in The Sports Bra. Ohanian is one of the co-founders of Reddit and part owner of Angel City Football Club in the NWSL. Ohanian is also married to tennis superstar Serena Williams, and is a founder at Seven Seven Six, self-described as “a tech company that deploys venture capital.”

“At Seven Seven Six, we’re enthusiastic about the incredible advancement in women’s sports,” says Ohanian. “Our foundation is proud to back The Sports Bra, which is a welcoming place for everyone to celebrate these athletes’ feats.”

The investment in The Sports Bra comes at a great time for women's sports, with the 2024 NCAA women’s basketball tournament and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team matches breaking viewership records. But knowing that's not the end of the road, 100% of the returns from 776 Foundation’s investment will be earmarked for future donations to boost future generations of female athletes.

Nguyen says, “When I first opened The Sports Bra two years ago this month, I had no idea the impact it would have on so many so quickly. Now I can see we’re just getting started. With the support of Alexis and 776, we plan to bring The Bra to cities across the country and beyond, and continue to invest in our mission.”

Basketball star Caitlin Clark has been making national headlines, propelling the sport of women's professional basketball. Along the way, she has been setting records, and the WNBA athlete is on track to breaking yet another one. It was recently announced that Clark is planning to continue her $28 million contract with Nike, which spans eight years, after her previous name, image, and likeness deal expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Should the contract go through, it would be the biggest sponsorship contract for any single women's basketball player in history.

Sports giants Under Armour, Adidas, and Puma were also in talks with Clark's advertising team, though Puma dropped out of the negotiations early on after allegedly finding out that bidding would start at $3 million per year. Clark has received offers of $16 million from Under Armour and $6 million from Adidas for four years, and both of these deals would feature signature shoes, just like the Nike deal.

All of these inbound deals come as no surprise as Clark is a highly sought out athlete after an incredible year. She recently made history for becoming the all-time leading scorer, male or female, in NCAA Division I history. Even more recently, she became the first two-time winner of the Sullivan Award, which aims to recognize outstanding athletes at the collegiate, Olympic, or amateur level in the United States. Currently, Clark is set to begin her first season with the WNBA Indiana Fever team after it starts on May 14, so fans won't have to wait long before she is gracing their television screens once again.

Caitlin Clark will be signing an eight-year contract with Nike for $28 million, making it the biggest sponsorship contract for any single women's basketball player.

The best vintners can tell you the region, grape variety, and year of production of a specific wine just from a sniff and a little sip. But can they also do it while running a marathon? Wine merchant Tom Gilbey put his skills to the test for a good cause. As the expert ran the London Marathon, he stopped at various points to taste 25 wine samples and guess at their origins.

Gilbey has made a name for himself on TikTok, where he shares his knowledge and advice on wine, earning the nickname of “the wine guy.” Ahead of the London Marathon, he announced he would be running to raise money for Sobell House, the hospice charity that looked after his mother in her final days of life. Gilbey had an original target of £2,000 ($2,488), but once his video running and blind-tasting wines went viral, donations soared, and his fundraiser has now passed £17,000 ($21,136).

The wine connoisseur chronicled his effort in one video. The premise was simple: he'd run the marathon and stop every mile to sample a wine. Ready for the adventure, he ran with two glasses attached to his fanny pack: one for the reds and one for the whites. Gilbey tasted wines from all over the world, from Chile to South Africa, from Australia to Spain with many coming from gas stations and mini bottles. Out of the 25 wines he blind tasted, he got seven completely right, four wrong, and 14 mostly right, as he did guess some of the details.

Due to his wine stops, Gilbey ended up completing the race in four hours and 41 minutes. Overall, he described the marathon as going “really well,” saying that he was spurred to run by the prospect of having a little wine at the end of each mile. To avoid getting too drunk to run, he only had small sips of wine or simply spat it out after tasting. “I think the pain of the running allowed me to not feel anything other than the urge to finish. I think it’s a great way to stay sober,” he told The Guardian.

“It’s my first experience of this going absolutely mad, and I feel very honored,” he concluded after celebrating the finish with a glass of champagne. Although he wouldn't go through it again, he would recommend others to undergo a similar crazy task.

Gilbey said, “I think in life, sometimes you get a silly idea that resonates but two silly ideas rarely resonate, so I’d encourage everybody to have a silly idea for a good cause and see what happens.”

Vintner Tom Gilbey has made a name for himself on TikTok, where he shares his knowledge and advice on wine–earning the nickname of “the wine guy.”

Caitlin Clark Roasts Michael Che for Past Jokes About Women’s Sports in SNL Weekend Update Appearance

For years, viewers of SNL‘s Weekend Update have grown used to watching the anchors, Colin Jost and Michael Che, routinely make playful jabs at each other. But on April 13, another guest was invited to dunk on Michael Che—figuratively at least.

The segment started with Che making a joke about college basketball star Caitlin Clark's jersey being retired, saying, “The University of Iowa announced that basketball star Caitlin Clark will have her jersey retired and replaced with an apron.” The joke was not well received by the audience. However, it was quickly followed up by the comedian saying, “Well, the WNBA draft is this Monday and Iowa star Caitlin Clark is expected to be the No. 1 pick. Here to comment is Caitlin Clark.”

Much to the shock of audience members, rather than one of SNL‘s regular cast members in costume pulling up a chair next to the anchor, Clark herself appeared on stage with a small grin on her face. Che immediately backpedaled, saying that he was a big fan of her, but Clark deftly pointed out that he had just made a sexist joke about her jersey being replaced with an apron. She then followed up by asking, “You make a lot of jokes about women's sports, don't you Michael?”

Colin Jost, never one to pass up an opportunity to make jokes at Che's expense, immediately presented a reel of some of his co-anchor's jokes about women's sports over the years. Che then conceded, saying that he could not play basketball nearly as well as Clark. The athlete then said that she appreciated it, and admitted that she knew she couldn't tell jokes as well as the comedian… but did inform the audience that she wrote some jokes for Che to read off if they were interested in hearing them. Begrudgingly, Che agreed. Clark certainly gave Che a run for his money.

After the jokes, the segment ended on a positive note, as Clark earnestly thanked the women's basketball players that came before her, including Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, and Dawn Staley—who notably coached the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 87-75 victory against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA women's championship final this year. She also thanked Maya Moore, who Clark called her “basketball hero,” and added, “These are the women that kicked down the door so I could walk inside, so I want to thank them tonight for laying down the foundation.”

Clark's skill has propelled women's basketball into the spotlight, which has in turn helped uplift other women in the sport. This year, she made history for becoming the all-time leading scorer—male or female—in NCAA Division I history. She ended her senior year with 3,951 points and 1,144 assists, and was just drafted to play for the Indiana Fever in the WNBA. Whether you love her or hate her, you cannot deny that Clark is a certifiable GOAT.

Caitlin Clark is about to enter the next era of her extraordinary basketball career. Having declared for the 2024 WNBA Draft, Clark was expected to be the No. 1 pick. Joining the league is only the natural progression for an athlete that has not only broken multiple records, but also drawn new audiences to her sport. That's why her college team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, have sent her off with one final grand gesture.

“There will never be another @CaitlinClark22 & there will never be another 22,” the Iowa Women’s Basketball team tweeted. “The #Hawkeyes will retire Clark’s No. 22.” Clark ended her NCAA career as the all-time leading scorer, male or female, in Division I basketball history. Overall, she made 3,951 points and 1,144 assists. Clark was also named National Player of the Year twice, having led her Iowa team to two national runner-up finishes.

The 2024 NCAA championship game marked the end of Clark's college phase, in which Iowa lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 75-87. Despite the outcome, Clark was the top scorer—30 points, eight rebounds, and five assists—and earned a special shout out from the opposing coach, Dawn Staley. “I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport. She carried a heavy load for our sport and it just is not going to stop here on the collegiate tour, but when she is the number one pick in the WNBA Draft, she’s going to lift that league up as well,” Staley said. “Caitlin Clark, if you’re out there, you are one of the GOATs of our game and we appreciate you.”

Ahead of the WNBA Draft, Clark made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. After calling out Weekend Update‘s Michael Che's dismissive comments regarding women's basketball, Clark praised past legends. “I'm sure it will be a big first step for me, but it's just one step for the WNBA thanks to all the great players like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, the great Dawn Staley, and my basketball hero, Maya Moore,” she said. “These are the women that kicked down the door, so I could walk inside. So I want to thank them tonight for laying the foundation.”

Now, it’s official that the Indiana Fever has selected Clark as its No.1 overall pick at the 2024 draft. To stay up to date with Clark, you can follow her on Instagram.

29-Year-Old Becomes First American Woman To Complete Solo Sailing Race Around the World

As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” This certainly applies to New York-born competitive sailor Cole Brauer, the first American woman to competitively sail solo around the world. Her even keel personality and highly informed knowledge of the sport are the perfect recipe for success, as Brauer serves as a pillar in this industry. The 29-year-old began the Global Solo Challenge departing from A Coruña, Spain, in October 2023. Finally, she made her way back to land in March 2024, aboard her vessel named First Light. This competition is for sailors who desire a challenge to circumnavigate the sea, sharpening their skills with each wave they leave behind them.

Throughout her months at sea, Brauer was not phased by the wildly unpredictable behaviors of Mother Nature. She worked tirelessly towards achieving her incredible feat. Along the way, the determined competitor chronicled her 130-day journey at sea on Instagram. In addition to documenting her experiences, Brauer also educates her viewers on various sailing terminology and the application of different sailing techniques. For example, she references the term “reefing” the sail. This means to lower your sail to accommodate increases in wind, allowing the vessel to maintain a manageable speed that allows its captain to have more controlled steering.

As a former student of the University of Hawai'i, Brauer achieved many academic and athletic achievements. From earning the 2017 Jack Bonham Award for academic and athletic performance to being a part of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Academic All-American Team twice, she continues to raise the bar. And with this latest challenge, Brauer had opportunities to refine her skills in the unique backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

As the youngest competitor in the Global Solo Challenge, Brauer overcame the intense gales of the open sea. Even as water began to pile into her vessel, she quickly decided to use the pump to eliminate the excess. Extreme temperature changes, intense turbulence, and the uncertainty of what the next day would hold did not stop her from persevering. Thinking quickly on her feet, Brauer also made repairs to her vessel during the race. In an Instagram clip, Brauer addresses how her hydro generator was not functioning properly. She calmly identifies the problem and makes a plan to fix it. Ultimately, she is responsible for navigating the vessel and making any necessary repairs along the way. Through her social media videos, Brauer shows vulnerability by sharing the difficulties that she encountered throughout this challenge, while maintaining her composure.

As she circumnavigated from Spain to South Africa and Australia, Brauer finally crossed the Atlantic Ocean back to her starting point—A Coruña. Her dedicated spirit, enthusiasm for life, and desire to inspire young women to pursue their dreams shone through her expedition.

To stay up to date with Brauer’s future adventures, you can follow her on Instagram.

Brauer relished in the breathtaking scenery that accompanied her expedition.

She also made sure to spend time recharging her battery with a little self care.

Along the way, Brauer shared her journey with her followers, marking how far she'd traveled and how much was left.

In the end, the inspiring young woman completed her journey by earning second place in the Global Solo Challenge.

We may be less than 100 days into 2024, but the world of sports has already seen some things that are going straight into the history books. And all the while, an art lover with a keen eye continues to match these moments to fine art pieces, much to the delight of their followers. After its breakthrough in 2023, Art But Make It Sports is stronger than ever, finding uncanny resemblances between two areas that can feel so disconnected at times.

The clever account is run by LJ Rader, who is clearly gifted at pairing a sports photo with art he's seen before. The accuracy in the matches is so unbelievable that many fans have wondered if there is any use of AI involved, but Rader assures there isn't. The speed and brilliance with which he finds visual and thematic pairs is a testament to his deep art knowledge.

Among the 2024 sports moments that have been art-ified is the rise of Caitlin Clark as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I. Rader expertly matched an image of the celebrations to a procession of Queen Elizabeth I. Clark also led Iowa to victory in the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament. Her Kobe Bryant-inspired picture was then compared to a painting of the Virgin Mary.

At Art But Make It Sports, athletes are not the only ones that inspire comparisons. Rader matched an image of a soccer referee bewilderingly giving two cards at the same time to a Miró painting, while the image of a fan carrying his baby (who looks like he's drinking from a can of beer) was compared to an artwork featuring an infant Jesus drinking wine.

Ultimately, few events sparked as many funny moments as the NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl. From Patrick Mahomes' broken helmet to Travis Kelce's Kusama-like shiny outfits, the Kansas City Chiefs games were full of quirky scenes. Still, nothing beats winning the Super Bowl—well, maybe one thing does. Kelce's brother, Jason, starred in a roaring celebration that will live forever in the memories of fans as a modern version of The Feast of Bacchus.

Climbing is one of the most thrilling sports out there. When practiced in the big outdoors, athletes are at the mercy of nature, ascending mountains and big rocks by holding onto any spot they can. This has never stopped Amity Warme, an American climber who recently conquered a perilous trail known as The Book of Hate. To mark her successful ascent, Warme shared a nerve-wracking video of her pushing through to reach the top.

The Book of Hate is a 150-foot ascent in Yosemite National Park. Since it doesn't have places for climbers to grip on to, they must rely on the friction between their palms and feet in order to ascend. Additionally, the path gets steeper the higher they go, making it a uniquely complicated route even among experienced athletes. For Warme, who loves a challenge, these tough conditions inspired her to give it a go.

The ascent she posted on social media wasn't her first or second try. ⁣”On day one, I optimistically, I attempted to flash it but slipped fairly low. Go number two, I came heartbreakingly close, but fell partway through the upper crux,” she shared. Warme returned a few days later, choosing to do the route one section a time.

The nail-biting footage shows her screaming in both desperation and pain—she would later find out that she had a rupture in her middle finger. To avoid falling from such a dangerous height, she quickly pulls out a cam, a little grounding safety device to latch her harness into, and sticks it in the rock.

Despite the extra support, she still struggles to find her footing, clings to either side of the wall, and for a few seconds, it looks like she won't make it. “I nearly fell several times but tapped into my super power—trying HARD—and that effort was rewarded,⁣” she recalled. In the end, Warme finally pushed through and climbed onto the final crevice, letting out a sigh of relief. “That was hard,” she can be heard muttering as she catches her breath.

Warme now plans to tackle El Capitan, a deadly 3,000-foot-tall monolith in Yosemite that has claimed the life of many climbers. But first, she has to recover from her finger injury. This pause has only deepened her love for the sport. “Time on the sideline has made me appreciate all the little things even more now that I’m building back,” she wrote. “Just putting on climbing shoes and lathering my hands in chalk as I gear up to climb makes me ridiculously happy!”
